Making your own wind turbine can be a great way to slash energy costs at home and to start taking part in renewable energy. There are several ways though, that you can get too aggressive and make mistakes. Therefore, it is best to consider these potential pitfalls carefully before you leap: 1. Installing your windmill where it is convenient rather than where the wind is best. When most people think about getting a wind turbine, they are not thinking of relocating it to optimize their wind. The first thing that comes to mind is usually where will it look the best. However the wind is very different at different parts of your property. For example, the wind on your roof can be very turbulent but if located in the proper place a wind turbine can function very nicely there. Always the best place to install a wind turbine is in the strongest and most consistent wind flow, which is always at least 30 feet above the level of the trees. However this can be a very expensive place to locate a turbine because of the fact that you have to add a tower to the equation, which can cost as much as the wind turbine itself. 2. Not checking with community government organizations before buying. This is one that can really get you in trouble. Every community, it seems, has a different opinion of wind turbines and how they should be located on one\'s property. Some restrict the height of the turbine and how far it can be from neighbors\' property. And, then some communities don\'t make any restrictions at all. The bottom line is you need to visit your local municipal government and possibly even your neighborhood association and learn what their position is on personal wind turbines. Find out if there are any permitting restrictions that you need to learn about before you actually dive in and take a look at a specific turbine type. 3. Taking on too much of the construction and installation yourself. If you are good with home improvement projects, you\'ll likely also be good at building and installing your own wind generator. What you must take into consideration though is the amount of time that will take if you\'re willing to invest that. It may be cheaper in the long run for you to hire an outside contractor to do the more difficult parts. Making your own wind turbine can be an exciting project that pays benefits for years to come. But, you must be careful and take your time on the front end to avoid these mistakes.
