Vertical Wind Turbine Kit vs. Horizontal Wind Turbine Kit There are two types of wind turbine kits in town now - the vertical wind turbine kit and horizontal wind turbine kit. Which is better for you and why? There are several factors that you need to compare these two choices but first you must take some time and understand what you need the windmill for. This is often a step that is glossed over or even entirely overlooked. You may say, "but how could someone spend this much money - thousands of dollars - and not know exactly how they are going to maximize the power output?" Well, that happens all the time. The reasons I think are, people don't know how to figure out their wind and the need to do it hasn't been adequately sold to buyers by the wind turbine manufacturers. To make it short and sweet, you need to know that all areas around your house will NOT be the same for wind. You can be calm at 10 feet and have a 10 mph stream of wind occurring at 100 feet. You need to spend a little time and understand where your first, second, and third choice of location is for mounting the device. Interestingly, this understanding of the wind around your house will usually lead you to the kind of turbine to get. For example, if you are restricted to placing the device on your roof and you have any community restrictions, your best bet will probably be vertical, not horizontal. The differences are discussed below: Efficiency of operation - horizontals are the winners here. Horizontal wind turbines can approach efficiencies of 55%, while vertical wind turbines in their most efficient variations can only approach 35%. First cost - almost across the board, vertical wind turbine kits will be more costly than comparable horizontal wind turbines. Accessibility for repairs - usually vertical wind turbines are located on your roof and therefore much easier to get to when it is time for regular maintenance and periodic parts replacement. Ability to operate in chaotic wind conditions - verticals win in this category as well. Horizontal wind turbines are designed to shut down in turbulent wind. Easy to install on a roof - vertical windmills don't put as much stress on the underlying roof structure as horizontals do. In conclusion, there is not a one size fits all in the wind turbine world. A vertical wind turbine kit though is the best if you are operating in a chaotic wind environment like your roof.
