The Keurig coffee maker company first introduced the single cup brewing system in 1998 as a way of capturing the market for office coffee machines. Prior to 1998, most coffee for offices was dispensed through vending machines, or the office had its own coffee maker and office workers took turns brewing full pots of coffee. Therefore, the idea by Keurig to manufacture coffee makers that brewed one cup at a time was revolutionary. At the center of this ground breaking idea were these things called a Keurig cups.

What are Keurig Cups? K cups are small plastic pods that contain a filter and a precise amount of very finely ground coffee, tea, or hot cocoa. The amount of the dry mixture is proportioned to yield a perfectly brewed beverage every time. The top of the pod has an airtight seal to protect the flavor of the ground coffee or tea inside the pod. The airtight seal keeps out humidity, light, and oxygen; all of the things that can turn coffee stale.

What should I do before brewing? Setting up a Keurig coffee maker is simple. First, fill the water reservoir with fresh, filtered water. Second, turn on the coffee maker and wait for it to heat up, about 3-4 minutes. Then your Keurig coffee maker will let you know it is ready to brew.

How do K cups work? Pick out the Keurig cup you want to brew, a Green Mountain coffee roasters Nantucket blend for example, place your k cup pod into the Keurig coffee maker, and close the lid. When the brew process begins, the top and bottom of the pod is punctured. The small tube that punctured the top of the pod injects pressurized water heated to 192 degrees Fahrenheit into the pod. In twenty to thirty seconds, the brewed coffee will begin pouring into your cup. Within one minute, from start to finish, you will have a hot, perfectly brewed cup of Nantucket blend in your hand.

How many flavors of k cups are there? Keurig Cups come in over 200 varieties of coffees, teas, and hot cocoas. Some of the more popular flavors are Coffee People's original donut shop extra bold, which has a full-bodied flavor. Newman's Own organics special blend extra bold is a blend of medium and dark roasts. Green Mountain Coffee has a breakfast blend that is more of a light blend, and their Nantucket blend is known for being a full and hearty blend. Besides coffee, there are many types of teas from various premium tea companies, choices of hot cocoas, hot ciders, and iced beverages. Having refreshing beverages using k cups means that every cup, every time, is brewed to perfection.
