The safety needs of data centres cannot be modest. There needs to be 24 hour security available to prevent and deal with any security breaches that may be attempted. Data centers have a huge responsibility to ensure that client data that is hosted in their premises is not unlawfully accessed. Not ensuring the safety of customer data can represent the data center to legal liability, loss of business and also other serious results. For these reasons, arranging a visit to your colocation data center will naturally require some prior planning and communication with the data center.

Colocation data centres unlike other types of data centers have a delicate balancing. They are hosting customer hardware which might need regular access in comparison to conditions where the hardware is owned by the data center. On this basis, a lot of UK colocation data centers will ask every customer to give a list of people who are to be given access. In a majority of cases the quantity of people to be given access is determined by the quantity of servers hosted. Smaller customers will of course have fewer people let in. There will also be a maximum number of persons even for big clients.

After the list has been agreed on, the client needs to provide the necessary documents and information of the individuals to be allowed access. Once this is done, those on the list can call in to book access times into the data center. Again, depending on the number of servers you have hosted, you can expect 24 hour access or working hour access to your servers. The 24 hour access comes with additional cost as all persons accessing the data center will be escorted so as to ensure the security of servers belonging to other clients.

In most cases, everyone who is to be allowed access into the colocation data center must go through induction where they are taught about the acceptable procedures and security requirements. This is done to guarantee the safety and security of each server hosted in the co-location data center. In case one of the individuals on the list needs to be replaced or removed, it is the responsibility of the client to inform the data center at the earliest possible opportunity.

Each non emergency visit to the data center needs a notice of at least 24 hours. Giving your intention to visit several days before is beneficial to both the customer and data center. You will be able to get a time slot that works in favor of you. In the case where you have a separate lockable space for your servers, the data center could issue an access card that would allow you frequent unescorted access to your servers.

All co-location data centers will have their distinctive security needs and processes and it is essential to understand them from the beginning. Failing to meet the terms will automatically deny you or your employees access to the servers. Even as it may appear to be very strict, access to co-location data centers should be controlled in order to make sure the security of every server including yours.
