Why is it a good idea to make a home windmill? There are a number of reasons but here are the three that will probably motivate you the most… 1. Save Money - by investing your time and money in a home wind turbine, you are setting up a perpetual energy generating system. The only costs you will have going forward are maintenance on the device and occasional replacement of parts, like blades, that wear out. 2. Reduce Your Carbon Footprint - with everyone and every business trying to reduce the impact that their carbon output has on the rest of the planet, anything you can do to displace power made in a fossil fuel generating plant is time well spent. This social pressure will only continue to grow. 3. Become Energy Independent - it is an unsettling time we live in. Things like an abundant supply of energy that most of us were brought up to believe was a birthright, are no longer a given. It is wise to consider going off the grid and becoming independent of your power company. It is not that hard to make a home windmill but you have to do some homework first to make sure it will work for you. The way you do that is to first see if there are any restrictions to putting up the wind turbine in the first place. Your local town government will be able to tell you what you need - whether there is a permit required or not. Then, you need to also see how much wind your have on your property. The easiest first step is just to get online and check out either the government wind sites or Weather Underground. You can input your zip code or city and it will tell you the average wind going back for years. To make it a no-brainer, you need to have 9 mph average wind. But, it is wise to not stop there. You need to also look into the wind on your property with a small device called and anemometer. You use the anemometer to validate the average wind speed by leaving this miniature wind turbine in the places you think you might install your windmill. In reality, we probably don\'t have a whole lot of choice in the matter. With energy supplies worldwide shrinking smaller and smaller, we have to turn to energy supplies that are inexhaustible. Learning how to make a home windmill is a skill that will continue to payoff years in the future.
