Just about everyone would like to look younger than their actual age if they could. Unfortunately people cannot prevent getting older, but they can now achieve a more youthful appearance by getting botox injections in areas where they have lines and wrinkles. As with any procedure, it is important to understand it before having it done. This way, those interested in receiving the treatment can decide if it is appropriate and safe for them. One should always make an informed decision. Speaking with a doctor who actually does the injections is advisable as they will be best able to answer any questions that may come up. There is also a vast amount of information available on the internet, although the credibility of some sources may be questionable. It is important to have an understanding as to what exactly botox is and how it works in the human body. Botox is really a trade name that refers to a substance known as "botulinum toxin A", a neurotoxin that is produced by the "clostridium botulinum" bacteria and is the same toxin responsible for botulism food poisoning. Neurotoxins have a direct effect on nerves and the tissues surrounding them; the primary one being paralysis of muscle. The idea of having a toxin injected into the body may sound rather dangerous to some people, however they can rest assured that it is actually quite safe. The FDA approved the use of botox in 1989 for treating certain medical conditions, and in 2002 for cosmetic use. Botox injections eliminate lines and wrinkles in the following way; a tiny amount of the toxin is injected into specific locations in the muscles of the face where the wrinkled effect is noted and it works on the nerves within the muscle. Wrinkles basically are contractions of the muscles causing an indentation, if these muscles are paralyzed there can be no wrinkling of the tissues. Not all types of fine lines and wrinkles are suitable to be treated with botox; it is most commonly used in the glabellar area or "frown lines" between the eyebrows, but is also used to treat crow's feet, forehead furrows, and some lines on the neck. The effects of the injection are not seen instantly, and can take a few days to appear as it can take this long for the toxin to cause the full relaxation of the muscle. People need to be aware of the precautions before they decide to undergo this treatment; it should not be used on patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a neurological disorder. Generally this procedure is safe and only involves a slight sting and redness at the injection sites, but occasionally side effects can occur such as a slight drooping of an eyelid, however in most instances this does not happen and does not last long if it does. This treatment does not provide permanent results and needs to be repeated every few months, depending on how quickly the individual's body absorbs the substance. Although getting botox may seem a bit risky to some people because of the fact it is a toxin, it is normally quite safe and is an effective way to temporarily reduce wrinkles and look more youthful.
