How Do You Look For The Best Wind Generators For Your Home?

If you are on a search for the best wind turbines for your home, you need to make sure you're barking up the right tree. What I mean by that is you need to take the time to do your homework up front to be certain you're buying the right wind turbine for your unique set of circumstances.

First of all, there are two basic types of wind turbines:

1. Horizontal axis wind devices - these are the most common and probably what you think of when you imagine a picture of a wind turbine. They follow the classic Dutch design with the driveshaft spinning in a plane parallel to the surface of the earth. They are relatively efficient for wind turbines - on the order of approximately 55%.

2. Vertical axis wind devices - this type of wind turbine disoriented 90° away from the orientation of the horizontal axis device. In other words, the shaft turns in a plane perpendicular to the surface of the earth. These wind turbines are actually very inefficient. The most you can get out of a vertical device is about 35% efficiency. At the moment, horizontal axis wind turbines earn much cheaper than vertical axis devices and are probably the best wind turbines. The reason for that is horizontal devices have been on the market a lot longer and economies of scale have driven their cost down. There are many fewer vertical devices and therefore their costs are still relatively high.

Also, there are two things you need to particularly pay attention to before you make any decisions about what kind of wind turbine you need and want:

1. Make sure you're clear about what you're expecting out of the wind generating device. Are you looking for something that will simply charge a set of batteries? Or, are you looking for a device that may power your whole house?

2. Then, take the time to make sure that your property has at least a couple of locations that will provide adequate wind resources. All you have to do to really get this right is take some data places where you would like to potentially install. You can do that with a small handheld device called an anemometer, that cost no more than $50 online at places like Amazon.com.

The best wind turbines are ones that fit your particular circumstance. That means, the best wind turbine overall are the best one to fit your situation.
