The Advantages Of Molecular Imaging

By : Adrianna Noton

It is known that a very important thing in modern science is the molecular imaging. It is extremely useful because it is the reason why the scientists are able to see and study the cellular function, and another important thing, they can observe the molecular process at a very tiny scale. Probably the biggest advantage of this possibility of observation is the fact that the scientists can take a close look at what happens in the living body without perturbing any molecule.

Imagine for a second what does that really mean. It is a huge step forward for science, being able to observe molecules without interfering. Also, think about the possibilities of this field. With such means of study, the scientists can diagnose the diseases like cardiovascular or neurological diseases, and even cancer.

This field is basically the means of displaying molecules without interfering. There were ways of doing this in the past too, but such traditional ways were based on interference. They could interfere chemically, or the measurement could be done on the differences of water, or density.

Studying at such a low scale allows the scientists to observe and uncover great mysteries. It gives the possibility of analyzing the fine molecular changes, the interactions between molecules, and many more. It is like a new direction that the science has taken, because now all the science fields count on the molecular imaging.

There are many modern ways of displaying. One of them is the magnetic resonance imaging, known as MRI. The MRI has a quite high resolution, and it is a very good way of observing the morphological displaying and functional displaying. But there are some disadvantages too. MRI has a quite limiting sensitivity. It is not the best way of detecting the molecular high energy state or low energy state.

Another way, which also got its advantages and disadvantages compared to the other ways of doing this, is the optical imaging. The advantages of this method are the fact that it does not require many safety concerns. It is probably the safest method, and it is pretty cheap too.

But there, of course, is a downside. The disadvantages of this method are the lacks of penetration depth. Unlike other methods, this one is related to the absorption and scattering of light, and this is influenced a lot by the body. The light gets absorbed, or used, so the images are shadowy if the depth passes the limit.

Basically, this method works by using sources of contrast. These sources are, of course, made by the scientists, and so they use the absorption, the bioluminescence, the reflectance, and even the fluorescence. Each of these modalities is different one from the others. One may be cheaper while one may be expensive, one may be better at depth penetration while one may lack in this area. One may have better resolution than the others, and so the list can go on. The important thing is that all of them can be used, and used together, they form the molecular imaging, the great step that science had made in the twenty-first century.
