Water damage in a house can be caused by a number of sources. The sources can include broken pipe, pin-hole leaks, burst or frozen pipes, broken hose, plumbing failure, backed up toilet, overflow of toilet, roof leak, slab leak, flood water from rivers and sea, storms and more. There are some types of water leaks which will not be recognized easily and they can only be spotted when the damage has gone too far. Apart from this there will be problems where water damage becomes evident as water stands in rooms and need to be flushed out. However, you need to be very careful while working on water damage clean up because of the fact that there are several hazards which you need to deal will. There are safety measures that you will have to keep in mind during water damage clean up. The safety measures are mentioned below:

You will need to make sure that you avoid hazards. The biggest hazard that you will have to deal with is that of avoiding the water and electricity combination. This is because of the fact that water and electricity can together kill people. Water is a good conductor of electricity and if somehow the water comes in touch with electricity the entire room and any wet area will be electrocuted and can cause accidents. Avoid using electrical appliances during the process of water damage clean up and the best practice will be to turn off the main power supply so that accidents can be avoided.

Stopping the water source is the next precaution that you need to take. There will be a valve to turn off water supply in your house. These types of valves are generally located outside the house. Find it and shut it off so that more water is not released inside the house. If you are actually unable to find that valve, you can actually call your fire department and ask for aid. They will definitely guide you through the process of finding the valve.

If the source of water is sewer and or back up bathroom, you need to avoid walking through the water and roaming around in other rooms. If you do so, the harmful bacteria, fecal matter and other harmful things can reach other rooms and can result in health problems.

Remove furniture from the room which is water logged. This is because of the fact that wooden furniture are known to cause harm to the carpets in the form of stains. However, if removing the furniture is not really an option, make sure that you use some kind of barrier between the carpet and your wooden furniture.

Make sure that the ventilation of the room is increased so that the problem of foul smell can be avoided.

Finally, remember to ask for immediate emergency help when there is some kind of water damage. This will save you from future expenses because of increased damage.
