Hypnosis on its own has a negative connotation, perhaps because of the way it's presented in media. And conversational hypnosis, sometimes even known as "black ops" hypnosis seems to be the more controversial type. It's well known in urban legends as one way that people get others to do what they want without even the benefit of a deep hypnotic trance.

Can this affect even you? Yes, it can because we go into one type or another of hypnotic trance everyday. If you've become lost in thought when reading something and are surprised to find out a few hours have slipped by, or wondered where the time went while you were at your work, then you were in a hypnotic trance. But that was self-induced; could someone really ask you to do what they wanted just by talking to you?

Yes, this is true although most people use this for good intentions rather than bad. For example, several counseling sessions with a hypnotherapist would be enough for a person to rid himself of a deep-seated aversion or phobia, without even his awareness that he is being persuaded to do so. That said, it is illegal to hypnotize people without their consent or prior knowledge. So, where is this article leading you?

You can use conversational hypnosis yourself, at least the very basics of it, in order to boost your powers of persuasion. Have you ever experienced a time when you were able to win a major argument without even getting into a fight, yet not knowing how you did it? That was probably a time when you got the process of conversational hypnosis right. It's something innate in us that just need to be practiced in order to be used.

Is it wrong, however? In Dale Carnegie's very famous self-help classic, "How to Win Friends and Influence People," he actually teaches the fundamentals of conversational hypnosis without even mentioning it. And just the fact that it became the bible of many influential people, politicians, business people, and probably your next-door neighbor, shows how everyone would like to take advantage of this technique.

So, can you learn and practice this? As that major wave of the last century showed, of course you can. You can still buy that self-help classic, and also take advantage of courses being offered on the internet and quite possibly at your local college. Why not study it? It wouldn't hurt to up your powers of persuasion.
