Wristwatches With Heart Rate Monitors - Chest-Strap Versus Strapless Heart-Rate Monitors

A tremendous number of people workout in gymnasiums and do their running on the street these days. Everyone is trying to stay in better shape and stay healthy as long as they can. Watches with pulse capability are being used by more and more folks as people want to monitor their health real time while they are in a workout setting.

Why do you need to monitor your pulse while you're working out?

There are two reasons:

1. If you work out too hard and push your pulse too far beyond the limit for too long, you can endanger your health. Your pulse is the primary indicator of your health when you're working out. You need to stay on top of it especially if you are working cardio and are really winded.

2. The opposite side of that coin is that if you're not working out hard enough you're wasting your time in the gym. You need to be in the zone where you're getting the most cardiovascular benefit. Also, if you stay in a certain heart rate zone, depending on the exercise, you will lose more body fat. Losing fat is a key objective of most people working out of a gym these days.

There are three basic kinds of monitors that you can get with watches with pulse functionality:

1. Straps around your chest - this is by far the most accurate way to measure your heart rate and the best way if you are a serious athlete in a training situation. The reason I say that is the strap is hardwired to your watch and it gives you real-time pulse information.

2. Sensor on the tip of your finger - this is less accurate and requires that you stop when you need to take a reading from your heart rate watch. This can be a serious limitation because obviously your pulse is going to be lower when you stop. So, you're not getting an accurate reading of your heart rate when you have stopped exercising.

3. Ring sensor - this is the least effective of the three and the technology is even less reliable than the fingertip sensor. If you're really serious runner or a gym rat the ring sensor is simply not going to work for you.

The best thing to do however, when you are looking for watches with pulse functions you need to assess what it is you're really after and what information you need to monitor and when you need the data. If you are in a situation where you need real-time health data as you'reexercising, the only way to go is with a chest strap sensor.
