When Miss Marple spent a holiday in London she stayed at the fabulously expensive and luxurious Bertram's hotel. Scandals and foul play abounded behind the scenes. Such things are all very well for elderly lady detectives who have wealthy nephews. But if you just want to spend your vacation budget having a good time and prefer cheap hotels London has plenty. England's capital city is not an inexpensive place and most travelers look for ways to make their stay more affordable. If your hotel kings cross is just a place to sleep, shower, and stow your gear you probably don't want to put a lot of money into it. You have other priorities. Central London is a great area for many reasons. Business travelers come here because it is an important modern financial district. But it also has many historic attractions. One has only to walk through the central city to come face-to-face with street names and landmarks that have been made famous in books, films, songs and poems. Look for names like Fleet Street, historic home of the British press and the murderous barber, Sweeney Todd. Harley Street continues to be the preferred address of members of the medical profession. Baker Street was made famous as the dwelling place of the famous fictional detective Sherlock Holmes. The Tower of London was once a notorious prison. Today it is an exciting and colorful museum that should be added to the list of must-sees. Other candidates of that list include the Tate Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum. In addition to the big famous museums there are many smaller museums that cater to a variety of interests. Fans of comic art will enjoy the Cartoon Museum, just a short walk from the British Museum. And of course Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts won't want to miss 221B Baker Street the home of the Sherlock Holmes Museum. Madame Tussauds legendary Wax Museum is still located on Marleybone Road where it has been since 1884. It's a short walk from the Baker Street tube station. The exhibits have changed over the years but visitors still enjoy posing next to their favorite celebrities past and present. London has beautiful architecture, parks, gardens and shops as well as museums and galleries. But it also has an exciting night life. The Soho district, though cleaned up and newly fashionable since the 1980s, still retains some of what made it notorious in early years. Clubs and bars serve the latest music and shows that range from racy to raunchy. Prince Harry has been known to visit some of the livelier nightspots in the area. There are reasonably priced lodgings near all of the central city tube stations and near all of the attractions. An online search can direct you to reviews by experienced travelers. Look for places that are clean and unpretentious. When you enquire about rates ask about discounts. Often unadvertised bargains are available for the asking. For anyone who likes fun-filled days and nights and cheap hotels London is made to order.
