By : Brent McCoy

The Papillon (named after the French word for "butterfly" for the shape of their ears and often called the "Butterfly Dog") is a tiny, fun-loving breed that features distinctive ears and a white coat with patches of black, red, brown or several other colors. The breed first appeared in 13th century France, and they were originally bred for the main objective of companionship for French royalty.

A small number of their most typical features are seen as their playful, intelligent and eager-to-please temperament - which in essence make the Papillon a common preference for competitive obedience and agility or fun-loving owners looking for a pure companionship dog.

The Papillon is legendary for their happy, obedient and playful spirit. They are usually friendly with guests, which along with their small size often means they are unsuitable as a guard dog.

The Papillon is also accepted to be extremely intelligent - ranking 8th in comparison with other dogs when taking into account their ability to be trained obedience directives. They are additionally renowned to be playful with kids though young children need to be taught to not handle them too roughly - which makes them not the best choice as a family pet. The Papillon is very compatible with other animals such as cats and dogs who they may become very good playmates with once properly socialized.

Grooming the Papillon is a pretty easy operation. They require a small level of brushing twice each week with regular cleaning of their teeth and proper grooming every 6 to 8 weeks.

The Papillon is happiest with a good yard to give them room to run, and they can be sometimes unsuitable for apartment living due to their tendency to bark at almost anything. They can live in warmer environments, and they will be less comfortable if it gets too cold.

The Papillon takes pleasure in activities including a run around an off-leash dog park, regular play sessions or learning tricks. They have a high amount of energy but only this calls for exercise every day in the form of short walks to preclude behavior problems and to keep them calm while inside the home.

The Papillon could be the ideal dog breed for active and confident owners with a love for fun or families with older children. They are appropriate for anyone that is keen to do a small level of grooming and allocate time to give them positive obedient training and ongoing mental challenges as well as take them on short daily walks and grant a good quantity of companionship and devotion. Though they might be a little out of place for a pet for families with young children and apartment dwellers, if you are capable of meeting their need for fun, gentle care and mental challenges then the Papillon possibly will be the perfect dog for you.
