To build your own wind generator is to know freedom. Freedom from high energy costs that are outside of our own personal control. If you are going to construct your own wind device at home, there are several things that you must consider right from the start. 1. The first thing that you must do is have a goal in mind. Your goals can be anywhere from exporting power to the utility grid, to just installing a wind turbine to power a small intermittent device like a pump, just so you'll understand how this technology works. Most people start with simply a windmill that will charge a small set of batteries that they can use to backup key appliance like a refrigerator. Once you establish your motivation for moving forward though, you will be a lot more focused on what the options are and what your choices might be. 2. Then it is a good idea to really get to know the wind on your property. The wind has a totally different character in different places. There are some sites on your property that are outstanding for wind power generation and then there are some that are absolutely worthless. There is no easy answer. You must take the time to collect some data and decide where is the best place to build your own wind generator. The wind on your roof for example is very turbulent but might still be the best place for your device. Depending on where you live, in an urban setting for example, you may be restricted to only using your roof for installing the turbine. That's okay because there are many options available in which certain styles of turbine will flourish in turbulent environments like that. But, you need to take the time to really understand your property's unique wind signature. Once you've taken the time to really understand your options, you are in a position to pick a particular style of wind turbine to install. Vertical systems seem to work best on roofs where the wind is very chaotic. Horizontal systems don't work as well and those environments because they are constantly shifting to try to find the best wind. Once you've picked the right turbine for your particular location and application, finding just the right one on the Internet should be easy. If you build your own wind generator from a kit, where all the parts just fit together, you will pay approximately $800 for the kit itself to produce 700 Watts of electricity.
