Cosmetic surgery is becoming more popular among men and women that are interested in making changes to their appearance. A specific procedure, that is not surgical is becoming a common trend for people that want to eliminate unwanted hairs. Laser hair removal is a cosmetic procedure that can offer people confidence to those that are insecure about extra hairs. The procedure does have its benefits and drawbacks, so people must know if they are a good candidate for the procedure. Removing extra hairs through a laser treatment could be less painful but that usually depends on the individual. Waxing may feel more painful for some than others and the same thing applies to laser removal. Some people have said that the pain is very tolerable while others have compared it to being plucked by a rubber band. If people are sensitive to pain, then a doctor can apply an anesthetic ointment to the area. Many people prefer this procedure than other methods because they believe that over time the procedure will be cost effective. This is something that varies from person to person and depends on how often hairs are removed. Laser treatments often involve four to six sessions and can cost over three hundred dollars per session. Individuals will have to do the math themselves to see whether or not the procedure will be cost effective for them. A very few people may not gain the desired results once the procedure is done. Sometimes the treatment is not permanent and the hairs grow back. The hair that grows is usually finer and lighter in color that it is hardly noticeable. There has been a very small percentage of people that had their thick hairs regrow back. For dark skinned people, there is a risk of skin diseases and discoloration of the skin after the procedure is done. Dark skinned people will often need more than the recommended amount of sessions to have complete elimination of hairs. It is best to ensure that the doctor knows how to treat dark skinned people so that the necessary precautions are taken to prevent discoloration. Some fair skinned people are more prone to being burned. Those with very sensitive skin are also advised to not have the procedure because burning of the skin will happen no matter how much precaution is taken. Most reliable doctors will make this assessment and deny the procedure if they feel that risks are to high. As of right now, the treatment does not work on light or white hair. Red and blond hair cannot be removed by the treatment either. The best candidates are those that have black or very brown hair. The coarser the hairs are the better since the laser can successfully remove those types of hairs. As of right now, laser hair removal kits are available for home use. These kits are not approved by the FDA because too many risk are involved. The FDA is worried that improper use of the kits can cause severe burns and blindness. Other negative side effects from improper use are excessive swelling, redness and inflammation that can last many days or even be permanent.
