Adding an altimeter barometer watch to your equipment list on a run can be a tremendous way to improve the overall experience for you.

Now, when I say altimeter watch I mean one that has a number of features that will benefit you on outdoor run or wilderness of event, not just the altimeter. The altitude reporting function is simply one of many features that you will benefit from.

Also, it is common with an altimeter barometer watch to have these additional functions available:

* Compass

* Thermometer

* Barometer

The compass is particularly useful if you're spending a lot of time in the woods on your runs. Being able to glance down and tell almost immediately what your direction of travel is can be a huge asset.

You must keep in mind though that the compass function on the watch can be a big drain on your battery. You've got to be careful to turn this function of the watch off when you are not using it in order not to unnecessarily drain battery storage resources.

Also, keep in mind that the last display of compass direction will be at the point where the device put it to sleep to save power. So, it may not be reporting the direction in which you are actually traveling. You've got to make sure that you reset the compass so that it is now pointing in the direction that you are currently going.

The thermometer is a very straightforward device that does not take very much power but they can be an incredibly useful addition to your outdoor experience. Taking note of temperatures and correlating that with other functions on the watch, like barometric pressure, can really show you a lot about predicting changes in the weather.

The barometer function especially can be useful not only in terms of being able to correlate that with elevation or altitude, but also in making the watch useful for predicting upcoming weather changes. As the barometric pressure is rising, you can count on good weather being ahead. If the pressure is falling however, things are changing and negative direction and you can probably expect some inclement weather in the near future.

In summary, for a runner, or any outdoorsmen, this latest generation of altimeter barometer watch types can be a real asset to your outdoor experience. The great thing about this type of watch is that all of your important information is in one place. You can also access all this data by just moving your arm in front of your face which makes it much easier for somebody that is on the move to get important data and interpret it as they are moving.
