Rehabilitating smokers often buy Vermillion River e liquid (also known as e-juice) for use in an electronic cigarette (e-cig or e-cigarette). An e-cig is a device that allows a user to enjoy the pleasant effects of cigarette smoking without exposing themselves and others to the attendant health risks. The devices have three components: a cartridge containing a reservoir of e-juice and a mouthpiece, an atomizer and a power supply or battery. The most common design mimics the appearance of a conventional tobacco cigarette. Others are designed to resemble ball-point pens. Some models are very elegant looking, almost a fashion accessory.E-cigarettes and e-liquid are used in an attempt to mimic the pleasures of smoking without exposing users to the harmful side effects that have been attributed to conventional cigarette smoking. The first e-cig was patented by Herbert A. Gilbert in 1963. Sales were slow because, at that time, the dangers of smoking tobacco were unknown. The modern e-cigarette emerged from China in 2003. It was designed by a pharmacist who was employed by a company that was known at the time as Golden Dragon Holdings. Users refer to 'smoking' an e-cig as 'vaping' and may call themselves 'vapers'. Others refer to the devices as personal vaporizers (PV). The practice is growing in popularity. There are conventions known a 'vapefests' and vapers are very active on social networking sites. There is a movement in the UK to encourage pubs to permit them to use the devices. Most preparations contain water, glycerine and flavoring. Nicotine is sometimes added so that the smoker can wean themselves off without experiencing unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. The product comes in an increasing range of flavors. Some of the different flavors that are available are menthol or other mint flavors, candy (vanilla, caramel and chocolate), fruits, coffee and cappuccino. The more adventurous vaper might try a special blend like cherrywood, butter rum and some that mimic the taste of actual tobacco. It is also possible to enjoy vaping from a specially constructed pipe.E-smoking technology is very new and laws and regulating its use are still evolving. Consequently, there is little consensus as to their acceptability in different countries, or even within the United States of America (USA). A growing number of physicians heartily endorse the devices and want the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) to reclassify them as tobacco products as opposed to medical devices. Their position is they are safer than conventional cigarettes and that the use of e-cigs will reduce the levels of secondary smoke to which bystanders are otherwise exposed. The World Health Organization (WHO) would like to see more scientific studies of the devices but they do acknowledge that they may well offer an effective and safe alternative to other forms of nicotine replacement therapy. They believe that e-cigs should only be classified as a medical product if the marketer decides to make that claim. In Europe, Norway, the Netherlands and Latvia permit their use, while Finnish authorities approve only nicotine-free liquid. Canada so far have been slow to approve the devices for use. In New Zealand, scientists conducted a study and concluded that the devices are harmless when used as directed.
