Making Relocation Relatively Painless With Help From Your Movers

When it's time to move to a new location, your movers can be your best friends or your worst enemies. Sometimes it's better to have relatives move you than to trust ones you don't know, especially with your valuables. But if you're relocating a long distance from your previous home, chances are you'll need professionals to help you get the move accomplished. Here are some important things to consider in that case.

The moving company should know the area you're from as well as the area you're going to. This isn't as hard as it might seem, in that reputable large moving companies have crews all over the country and/or the world. You can load up your belongings in one place and have one crew handling the pickup and another one, in your new locale, handling the unpacking.

Those who know your new area can be great sources of information on your new town. They can recommend the best pizza delivery for that first night when everything's in boxes. They can offer shortcuts that will cut your commuting time to the new office. Sometimes, they can even help you find other great services in a town, especially if it's their home town as well.

Be careful, however, that you remember that they are businesspeople. Their job is to get you packed or unpacked and relocated. They still work for the company that handles your transport. Nothing they promise you verbally will supersede what you have in black and white on your contract.

Remember, too, that workers get paid for the tiny details. If you want moving boxes, you can get them from the moving company, but they're not free. If you want the crew to pack anything, they'll do it, but your costs will go up. Pack as much as you can yourself, and carry anything fragile or especially valuable with you in your car. That's the best way to avoid souring a moving-crew relationship unduly with complaints on either side.

Get several different estimates before you make your move as well. Preferably, get at least three like-for-like quotes; some folks get five or more. Some moving companies offer phone quotes, but resist that temptation. The company's rep needs to see your belongings to give you an accurate idea of the man-hours involved in taking them out of the house.

Each move is different. If you're moving a piano, for instance, the cost can vary widely based on size, type, and location. Other distinctive items of furniture need specific handling that can't be accurately assessed over the phone. Get the rep to come up close and personal with your belongings and you'll get a better quote.

The same goes for your destination. Merely saying you're going to a three-bedroom house doesn't convey its specifics. You need specific such as layout, stairs, accessibility, etc. Have photos, or even an online tour, available to help your mover ascertain where you're going and what it'll take to get you there.

Finally, once you've taken care of these details, try to relax. Moving can be stressful, so do your homework as best you can, but then try not to sweat small stuff. With the right movers, any glitches will, indeed, be small, and your experience will be both satisfying and economical.
