Home Wind Mill: What Will Be The Correct Elevation To Mount Them?

With home wind turbine products it is essential that you mount them at just the right altitude to get the most electricity that you possibly can from them. As you probably know, there are is many places to install a wind device around your property as there are square feet.

For example, with wind devices that you might mount on your roof, you are limited in scope by the aerodynamics and physics of installing a tower on top of that type structure. In other words, you can't install a tower as high as you would like to take advantage of the prevailing wind simply because you might be putting undue stress on the roof itself.

The home wind turbine can be especially effective at heights above the tree line. The ideal height is probably as high up as you can get one installed and still meet local code requirements. That is because the wind moves most steadily and most strongly the higher up you go. A difference of 20 feet can add another mile per hour to your average speed in a year which is significant when you're talking about producing electricity from the wind.

While it is possible to create a lot of electricity lower down in the atmosphere, it is just not as effective as what you can do higher up. Once you clear the height of the buildings near your home and the tree line, the wind can flow unobstructed and produce almost ideal conditions for a home wind turbine.

Home wind turbine products that are vertically-oriented are a lot less sensitive to the height at which you install them. That is because their blade systems are designed to move quickly in either direction and change directions based on whatever the prevailing wind is.

On a roof for example, the wind tends to change its direction quite rapidly and the vertical wind turbine is ideal in that environment. The horizontal wind turbines that are mounted higher up in the atmosphere above the tree line, are not as flexible and cannot change direction as quickly. There blades are a lot larger and the mass of those blades and their long length requires a lot of wind and order to move them and have them change direction.

Also, they use horizontal tail stabilizers that will direct the rotor and to the strongest wind which is where you're going to produce the most electricity.

In conclusion, the best height for your home wind turbine will always be high above tree line. That will allow you to generate the most electricity from the prevailing wind conditions on your land.
