Wind Generator Kits - Are Homemade Kits As Effective As "Store Bought"

If you are considering wind turbine kits you may be wondering if the quality of the product you will get with a kit compares to the quality of what you get fully installed and ready to go from a broker or manufacturer.

That is certainly a good question you are asking and the answer is a bit complicated.

On the one hand, if you build from a kit you are doing a lot of the work yourself, so it is going to be a good bit cheaper than what you would buy ready to go. The downside of a kit though is you are finishing the work, so the quality of the final product is dependent on your expertise or your care in completing the assembly and installation. In other words, YOU become the weakest link in the chain.

Another advantage of the kit is you are learning how to work on the unit as you build it. You are having to invest some time and energy into its construction and you will be able to address maintenance issues more readily yourself if you have put the device together yourself. If you buy the unit outright and just have it installed, you will be more likely to let someone else handle the replacements and maintenance, which will in turn raise your cost of operation.

One thing to keep in mind is that you or someone else, like a broker, needs to carefully assess your personal wind resources. Where you put your turbine up is way more critical than the type of turbine you buy.

The power rating that the wind turbine manufacturer claims is for a certain wind speed. So, if you are buying a 3 watt unit for example, it will produce 3 watts of power at a 30 mph wind for example.

Therefore, you need to be careful about assessing the wind on your property to make sure you are selecting a spot that has wind that will let you achieve the amount of electricity you expect to make.

In conclusion, you need to assess your desire to be involved in the day to day details of the windmill and your desire to invest and be done with it. Do you want to save the money you would pay to a broker and do the work yourself or you financially in a position to pay someone else to just get it done.
