This process of server colocation or colo houses your computer server in a data center for network integration. The data center is put up by hosting companies to allow computers to make use of their network and connect the server to the Internet. There are many advantages to colocation but maintenance is not one of them. Essentially in colo or server colocation, the hosting company will provide a space for your rackmount server but you still have to take care of its software and hardware maintenance. The importance of a good secure backup plan for co-locating your servers now becomes imperative. The responsibility of the provider is to make sure that a cabinet space is available for you and that you are connected to their network. Anything outside that like server performance and backing up of server data is the owner's responsibility. It is also good to ask the server colocation provider if they can put a package which will cover the backing up of your critical files. If this is not possible, your backup plan must be built around some common considerations. The physical distance between your business and the server colocation data center is of primary consideration. It plays a big role on the regularity of the backup process so as not to interfere with the normal business activity. This actually stresses the importance of a good backup plan for co-locating your servers. The main purpose of a good backup plan is to protect your investment in case your computer system experiences downtime. Any good backup plan allows you to minimize server downtime by being able to retrieve data easily from your backups. Every computerized business environment should understand that backing up of computer servers and workstations is not only practical but integral to operation. You must quickly identify the types of data stored in the server to implement a good backup plan. The types of data can be very varied and the same goes with their importance in relation to your business activity. Identifying the importance of the data will make it easier for you to implement a good backup plan. Would it be ideal to maintain backup of system and critical files or would it be more beneficial for you to maintain a backup server that contains exactly the same data? Full backup plan allows you to store an exact duplicate of your online information making any downtime shorter. The drawback to this scenario is that you still have to make regular backups of data in the online server and copy it into the backup server. The focus on where to store the backup files or the backup server is part of the consideration of any backup plan. Some colo providers may allow you to maintain a backup server in the data center but for a fee. Should co-locating your servers require a good backup plan should not be taken as a separate instance but more as part of the colocation strategy. Considering that colocation will place your computer server in a remote environment, backing it up should be part of your routine.
