The important benefits of industrial extractor fans is reflected in the range and diversity of products available in the market place. There are axial, centrifugal and blower fans available. Some may be installed in roofs and others at floor level. Fire fighting equipment may include extractors and there are also portable ventilation fans. The need for good ventilation is behind the need for extraction canopies. Harmful substances and gasses need to be expelled from rooms and the extraction stimulates the flow of fresh air into a building. Air quality has emerged as one of the most important issues in environmental health. Regulations concerning health and safety issues have been sweeping the world in recent times. Response to legislation can be seen from two angles. Some mining companies have been put out of business due to litigation relating to the ill-health of workers caused by poor air quality and lung infections. It is not only in mines that adequate ventilation is necessary. In buildings where fire is a potential hazard specifically appropriate installation should be installed. It is also very important to control the relative humidity of working spaces so that inconspicuous but deadly pests such as mold are prevented. Poor air quality may be dangerous without being noticeable. People may inhale poisonous gasses in small quantities for many years without being aware of it until lung cancer strikes. Anti-smoking legislation in restaurants may be less helpful than a couple of extractor fans in the roof. From this perspective there must be a moral obligation devolving on employers and entrepreneurs to ensure that they do what they can to protect air quality for clients and employees. Responsible steps to ensure healthy air quality enhances the reputations of employers and managers, being evidence of prudence and moral responsibility. There are also financial benefits deriving from right actions. Not only will costly legal and health costs be be avoided, but productivity may improve. Poor air quality can result in absenteeism. Less obvious may be slowness, discomfort and malaise which workers may experience without appreciating the cause. Good air quality may not be immediately apparent to people especially when they live in cities and are frequently exposed to polluted air anyway. Even when they are at the seaside or on a mountain slope where air is fresh they may not be aware of why they feel exhilarated and happy. They may attribute their a feeling of well being to other cause without realizing that it is actually fresh air that make them feel happy and energetic The benefits of industrial extractor fans might also not be put into words by chickens, cows or pigs, yet they are probably just as sensitive to good or bad ventilation as human beings. Even plants are extremely sensitive to air flows and can wilt and die if exposed to unhealthy humidity or poor ventilation. Therefore, an unseen but significant benefit of adequate ventilation is in the production of healthy food and the avoidance of sick building syndromes.
