Residential wind turbines are coming into their own and becoming very popular in their own right. With the global move toward reducing energy costs at houses, there are a plethora of new options available for this type of home energy device. So, the question is how do you know which kind is the best to buy? There are so many different options out there you must take your project on as you would a subject in school and learn everything you can about how these things operate before you decide on one particular type. There are really two kinds of residential wind turbines that you can realistically consider - vertically oriented type and the horizontally oriented type of wind turbine. Each carries its own pros and cons. Each has its own particular application where they work better than any other. The most efficient of all the possible choices you make is the horizontal wind turbine. Thankfully, it is also the simplest and easiest to intuitively grasp. The reason the horizontal axis wind turbine and so efficient is that it is essentially a magnet for the most prevailing wind in your area. The tail section that has virtually guarantees that the device will find the strongest wind wherever you place it. It has an efficiency that approaches 50% which for engineered devices, is quite high. Alternatively, the vertical wind device is a lot prettier. But, it has some limitations. The biggest limitation that is its lack of efficiency. Peak efficiencies for vertical wind turbine product range in the low 30s. This may be a good trade-off for you though. However, in my way of thinking, it is better to use a horizontal device and then overcome its limitations, rather than go for the more aesthetically pleasing and live with the inefficiencies. To each his own, but if you are trying to make the most power that you can from your investment, you need to strongly consider a horizontal axis home wind turbine as your primary choice. They also have the advantage of being cheaper. These devices have been around a lot longer and therefore the economies of scale have caused prices to drop quite a bit on these wind turbine kits. All in all, all residential wind turbines are a good thing to be seriously looking into these days. Even when they're bad they're good - what I mean by that is even though they're inefficient in some cases, they are still better than taking no action at all.
