Wind Powered Generator Technician: What Sort Of Wind Turbines Do They Really Work On?

By : Roger Brown

The wind turbine technician works on all varieties of wind devices, although they may tend to specialize in certain specific types. These devices are located pretty much everywhere nowadays.

The two broadest categories of domestic wind turbines are horizontal axis wind turbines and vertical axis wind turbines. These two types of wind turbines are the main ones but they are by no means the only ones available out there to decrease your power purchase from the utility.

The horizontal axis wind turbines are primarily used by large utilities and are used in wind farms that create hundreds of megawatts of peaking load for those utilities during times of extremely high use by the utility's customers.

These horizontal axis devices look a lot like traditional windmills and can be used by homeowners as well. They tend to work best when high up in the atmosphere at least a good distance above the height of trees and buildings. So, you will find more of these in commercial operations than anywhere else.

Vertical wind turbines are also used by utilities, but more commonly used on roofs of houses by residential consumers. They have a real affinity for chaotic wind and therefore do best in the roof environment.

The vertical type of wind device is in use quite so much by commercial utilities because it is less efficient. The most efficient type of wind turbine is one that you can put up above the tree level and take advantage of the fastest and strongest wind. These large commercial devices have tail sections that will seek the most prevailing wind and optimize power production by making fine-tune adjustments.

So, as a wind turbine technician you can have a career either maintaining commercial units or home units. Both will be lucrative and both will be in great demand.

The residential wind turbine units tend to be a lot cheaper to construct and to install. However, there will be a lucrative business for the wind turbine technician who can come in and mount this type of device that was bought by a consumer that didn't really have the mechanical aptitude to do it themselves.

In conclusion, wind turbine technician practitioners can work on a variety of different types of devices. There will be opportunities for both commercial and residential wind turbine service. Furthermore, there will be a lot of work for anyone specializing in initial set up and commissioning of wind devices.
