Buying wind turbines for homes may be the most important action you can take at the moment to take some control over your energy destiny. Other than renewable energy solutions, there really aren't any other good options for the consumer. As I'm sure you are to know, renewables are here to stay. As we are transitioning from an economy largely driven by fossil fuels, we have to consider every alternative in our search for reducing home energy costs. Until some innovative product comes along that allows us to extract energy from our local environment more efficiently, this will have to do. Here is your 3 question test to know if one is right for you… Are your energy costs over $.12/kWh now? If you are paying this much for your electricity or more, it is a very good chance that you will benefit from having a wind turbines for homes in your life. The hurdle cost of acquiring one of these devices will make the $.12 seem very expensive. Do you live in one of the central states? In the central part of the country is pretty much a no-brainer to consider wind energy as an alternative. At home, you can offset a significant part of your power costs by focusing on renewables. Wind turbines for homes are pretty much a given in some locales. States around Texas all the way up to the Canadian border provide excellent opportunities for using the wind that swirling around your house to power your electronics and other devices. Are there any local rules that severely limit home wind turbines? This can be a killer. Some local communities and government jurisdictions have not yet gotten on the renewables bandwagon. In other words, there are some cities and towns that put such restrictions on what you can do in terms of wind turbine technology that it's not worth the effort. For example some restrict any wind turbine that happens to be located within a certain distance from someone else's property line. We have also seen some restrictions that involve "shadow flicker", which is a phenomenon of shadowing by the rotor blades that causes some people psychological distress. In conclusion, wind turbines for homes are not the solution for everyone. But, they can make a big difference. There is no simple answer to this question. While renewables might be something that everyone should be at least looking at, there is no one size fits all answer as to whether it will fit for you where you happen to live.
