What Are The Causes Of ADHD

The causes of ADHD have never been accurately determined, though researchers now have a list of possibilities. One thing they are certain of is that parenting doesn't play any part in your child's condition, so blaming yourself is a waste of time and emotions. While parenting isn't involved, genetics might be. It has been shown that where families have relatives with the condition, your child stands an increased chance of having it also. Environmental factors also are believed to have a contributing factor in worsening the severity of your child's condition.

If you are exposed to poisons and certain chemicals during pregnancy, it may increase the possibility of ADHD in your child. If your toddler is exposed to these types of things, it could also lead to development of this condition. Lead is a perfect example of this, as it has been linked to violent hyperactivity, inattentiveness, and disruptive behavior.

In brain scans performed on children with ADHD, it has been shown that areas that control these types of symptoms are less active than with non-ADHD children. Smoking, drinking or taking drugs may have an adverse effect on the neurons, which produce transmitters that help control your child's behavior.

Hyperactivity has often been thought to come from food, although that has never been proven. However, refined sugar should be restricted in children's diets even if you only suspect a connection to your child's behavior changes. Realize that limiting sugar can't hurt, and it could offset the development of other conditions like obesity and diabetes.

Another aspect of diet is the horrible chemical additives that are found in almost all prepackaged and canned foods. It has long been suspected that preservatives and artificial colors affect the health of all who use them. Asthma and other allergies have long been known to be caused by some of these things. However, there are some researchers who attribute these things to causing cancer as well as have a hand in the symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD.

So, let's take a moment to review. ADHD may be hereditary, and can be exacerbated by the environment (poverty, a disruptive family). An expectant mother can contribute to the dangers by being exposed to poisons, smoking, drinking, or doing drugs before delivery. This may cause premature delivery, brain injuries, or low birth weight, all of which may be contributing factors. Diet may be a concern, if too much sugar, food coloring, and preservatives are consumed regularly.

Low levels of dopamine can cause the symptoms of ADHD. A neurotransmitter, this is the control factor in coordination problems, impulsiveness, hyperactivity, reasoning and alertness. These kids may have restless sleep, disturbing dreams, and difficulty falling asleep at all.

Possible contributing factors, but not actual causes of ADHD, might be extreme parenting methods, too much TV, and obsessive video gaming. Medical conditions, certain treatment processes, Tourette's syndrome, and learning disabilities can also contribute to ADHD and its severity.

One positive thing to keep in mind is that as children grow into adults, some outgrow the condition whatever the causes of ADHD be.
