Home Wind Mill: Should Solar And Wind Work Together

By : Roger Brown

The debate has always been - should a person buy a home wind turbine or a home solar collector? The manufacturers of these products have pitted themselves against the alternate technology much to the detriment of renewable energy market in general.

Both of these energy sources - wind and sun - have been known by ancient cultures and used and harnessed to drive grain production as well as moving water and other uses. We are by no means the first civilization to recognize or take advantage of renewable energy sources.

I would argue that it doesn't make sense to pick one or the other. While both sources can supply energy on a massive level, they are not mutually exclusive. You do not have to choose one of the other like this is some kind of a political contest.

Many times when the wind is blowing the sun is not shining and vice versa. And, there are times when you can take advantage of both at the exact same time.

Wind energy is created by the sun just like solar radiation heats the earth. Wind is alternately caused by the uneven heating of the ground and the vertical radiation the results from that over the course of a day. So really, both sources of energy are driven by the sun.

So, if you buy a home wind turbine and combine that with a home solar collector system, you will be optimizing your ability to collect energy from the sun given the current technology. If you do that you stand out greatest chance of making the most energy you can from your home energy system.

Your objective is always to create the most energy possible in a given unit of time. The more energy you can make and drive to a battery system, the more electricity you will have to run your appliances and other devices around your house.

While the cost of buying both a home wind turbine and a home solar power will be greater than if you buy home wind power alone, you will be paying less because you're installing both at the same time and you will receive economies of scale for having an electrician out at your house at the same time.

In conclusion, a home wind turbine is an excellent way to reduce your power cost and even greater when it is combined with a solar collector system in the same unit versus separately. The cost is a little more but you have the advantage of taking full advantage of the wind and sun on your property to make energy round-the-clock.
