Essential Facts About Fire Sprinkler Systems

By : Adrianna Noton

Fire sprinkler systems act as a protective mechanism to guard against fires. They are suitable for different applications, for example schools, commercial buildings as well as residential houses. A well installed system acts as a control mechanism and as a suppression system. It does decrease the spreading speed of burning material, thereby granting occupants time to get away from the affected area.

Sprinklers work by using water routed to various points in a building using pipes. Each point is fitted with a temperature sensitive bulb that acts as the closing valve. Water is then pumped through the pipes at a high pressure. In normal conditions, the water stays in the pipes, ready to be used. When temperatures go up, the bulb in the respective area bursts and lets the water out.

The temperature that a particular bulb activates at, varies from one type to another. Bulbs have a liquid in them when they have not been busted. This liquid is color coded to signify the temperature it should burst at. This is done to accommodate different applications, since all of them can not be the same. For example, the temperature in a typical home is lower than what is found in a smelting factory. These two applications require bulbs of different specifications to avoid false activations or failure to activate.

One major advantage this system offers is the ability to save water when an activation occurs. Since every point has it's own pressure valve, only the area affected by a temperature change gets sprinkled. Other areas remain water free, which reduces water wastage. It also reduces the damage that water can cause to sensitive items like electronics, books and others.

Reducing damage is the wish of everyone contemplating fitting such a system. The way it actively combats fires makes it more effective in reducing casualties in the affected area. The likelihood of property being damaged is also lowered significantly. The ability to fight a fire at the source makes this particular method much more effective than waiting for help.

Remote locations can also be served using this system, since they do not require that much water. Some installers have come up with water tanks that do not require much storage space. These tanks are able to hold enough water, that is adequate to handle normal emergencies. Furthermore, the tank sizes are in agreement with the set compliance standards.

These types of systems require very little maintenance. In most cases, they remain in good condition for about twenty years without major adjustments. Users are however cautioned against interfering with the temperature sensitive bulbs. Doing so can vary their operating temperature which may render them unreliable. When painting, for example, the bulb should never come in to contact with paint.

Fires can bring a lot of agony when they occur. Being prepared can mean the difference between life and death for the affected people. Having working fire sprinkler systems is a good way to prepare for the unexpected. The ability to fight fires as and when they start is a great way to reduce the risk of living a live of uncertainty.
