Home Wind Generator: Which Type 's Best?

By : Roger Brown

Of all the home wind turbine products out there, there are several that stand out above the others in terms of efficacy. As these devices become more and more popular, there are more and more products out there to appeal to consumers of all kinds.

There are basically two kinds of wind turbines that you need to seriously look at if you're going to buy residential wind device for your house…

The most popular of which is usually the cheapest and that is the horizontal axis wind turbine. These types have gotten a lot cheaper in recent years because they are so simple to set up and are the most efficient by far. Also they are very intuitively elegant for anyone who is purchasing this type of device for their house.

The way it converts wind into energy that you can use to power appliances is very straight forward. As the blades turn the mechanical shaft, the shaft turns the motor and produces electric current. That electric current is then transferred along the wires to whatever device you have it tied into. With a simple grid tie system, there are no batteries. That means that the energy you convert from the wind is going to have to be used immediately or it will dissipate.

The other alternative that is often considered is the vertical wind turbine, but it is a lot more expensive and a lot less efficient by a long shot. It is a lot more expensive because these devices tend to be pretty and sacrifice efficiency for aesthetic sensibility. This is not the reason most people get a wind device though. Most people are buying wind turbines these days to shave some money off of their power bills.

With rising energy prices and shortening supplies, we have all become as astute observers of the energy landscape worldwide. Although we don't know exactly where it is all going, we know we need to be taking some constructive action and the home wind turbine is one very strong alternative.

In conclusion, the best home wind turbine is usually the one that fits for your particular environment the best. There is a microclimate aspect to every location where you might install such a device. You must study that microclimate and adjust the wind turbine that you purchase to fit it. Anything less than that will be less than optimal. In other words, you could end up spending a whole lot of money and get no results, or at least get results that are a lot less than what you think or thought you should have.
