A number of children with an ADHD diagnosis don't grow out of the condition as they mature. About half of them will carry the condition into adulthood. As children mature they can have problems from the symptoms including lack of focus, hyperactivity and impulsiveness. They can have low self esteem, suffer from addictions and substance abuse and the inability to hold down a job. It is for this reason that some form of ADHD treatment should be implemented as soon as the condition is diagnosed. ADHD has different treatments, and they work to different degrees depending on the person. In some people the treatment might not work at all. Some therapy doesn't use medication, but depends entirely upon behavioral modification therapy. Therapy can also include one or more drugs. Diet, also is one of the methods tried to control the condition. For extreme cases, one, two or all of these methods can be tried in different groupings. The purpose of using ADHD Diagnosis on children (or adults) with this problem is to attempt to curb the impulses, focus their attention on the tasks at hand, and to lessen the hyperactivity. Using proven treatment methods have been shown to improve children to the point that they can function better in school and socially, and as adults, deal with the job place more satisfactorily. By using behavioral therapy coupled with drugs designed to stimulate the brain and other drugs to augment them, it has been shown to improve safely the child. Eliminating sugar from the diet is also considered to be effective in some cases as well as eliminating chemicals such as food colorings and preservatives from the child's foods. Many children who have gone through these treatments find themselves to be much improved in their ability to pay attention and follow the rules in school. They are more able to deal with personal relationships both with family and friends. Both the prescribed treatments and the condition needs to be fully understood in by teachers, parents, counselors and the child, so that it can be most effective. In order to effectively manage the child's behavior, administration of medication is also the responsibility when the child is in school. Part of effectively managing behavior requires a flow of communication in both directions continuously. What medications will be recommended by your doctors? Medications like Ritalin, Metadate, Concerta may be part of the regimen. It could also include amphetamines including Dexedrine, Adderall or the newer drug, Vyvanse. Vyvanse is thought to cause less dependence than other older stimulants. Antidepressants, in particular, Wellbutrin, are sometimes used when there is a problem of some sort with the stimulants. They are often used to fight the side effects of some stimulants, such as insomnia and various involuntary tics and movements. It is tolerated better with less side effects than with some tricyclic antidepressants like Norpramin, Aventyl, Pamelor and Tofranil. Intuniv and Strattera are nonstimulants that are also effective in treating ADHD in many cases. If your child receives an ADHD diagnosis, it's not the end of things. Getting help as soon as your child receives an ADHD diagnosis is key to your child growing up happy and healthy.
