Home Wind Turbine: Is Vertical A Better Choice?

[Valid RSS feed]  Category Rss Feed - http://www.articleforbacklinks.com/rss.php?rss=92
By : Roger Brown

There are 2 major types of home wind turbine products out there in the marketplace today. Those are the vertical axis wind turbine and the horizontal axis wind turbine.

While they both have their specific applications where they work best, one is emerging as a clear leader. That is the vertical axis wind turbine. The reason for that is multifold and I will go into those details for you now…

The biggest distinguishing characteristic between the vertical and the horizontal wind turbine is the lack of a tail section. The vertical axis device does not have a tail section to orient in the direction of the most prevailing wind.

You would think that would be an advantage for the horizontal axis device, but actually it is a plus for the vertical axis device. The reason I say that is the vertical axis wind turbine will allow you to operate in a more chaotic or turbulent wind climate. The horizontal device is much more efficient because of that tail section, but it will constantly shift to align itself with the most consistent and strongest wind. That will mean in a turbulent environment that is constantly moving back and forth.

This of course can all be very annoying for the neighbors. Most people do not like to watch a wind turbine shifts constantly in the breeze. This is one the main things that annoys people about home wind turbine equipment and why many communities will not allow them.

Also, the vertical axis wind turbine has a much smaller footprint than does the horizontal axis wind turbine. The horizontal axis home wind turbine takes up a lot more space because of the tail section and because of the way the rotor path is aligned. The rotor path is situated in a plane vertical to the surface of the earth. It spins like a propeller on an airplane and can be quite dangerous to passing flocks of birds. There are many documented cases of these wind turbines causing birds and other wildlife a hazard and that is one reason as well that many communities will not allow this type of device even on your own property.

In conclusion, the vertical axis wind turbine is by far the best choice if you're considering home wind turbine products. It is most likely going to be your strongest alternative for an urban situation by far. It's ability to work in a turbulent environment, combined with the fact that it is a lot more bird-friendly, make it a lot more sustainable choice for you if you're trying to work in ways of how to make power from the wind surrounding your house.
