Home Turbine: How Popular Are They?

By : Roger Brown

Home wind turbine products seem to be everywhere these days. It is not only in states with high wind, like Texas, but even in urban environments.

Home wind turbine systems are especially well suited for urban environments. The new iterations of these devices are perfectly suited for the chaotic wind environments that are found in big cities.

The reason they are so popular in urban areas is the fact that people don't have really any other renewable energy choices there. For example, if you happen to choose solar, the shading effect from other buildings in the area will likely keep you from producing very much energy in the final analysis.

Also, geothermal systems are not really an option because you need to be able to drill down 100 feet in some cases order to tap the heat for powering the turbine. That's not going to happen in a big city, obviously.

This is how popular the home wind turbine has become and these are the places that we find them nowadays…

First and foremost, they are found in rural environments on towers. All over the countryside and in the Midwest you will find home wind turbine devices. This is not a recent phenomenon and over the course of the last 50 - 100 years people have used this renewable energy resource to power pumps. Going one step further, people that live far away from sources of centrally generated power have to live off grid and can use wind devices to power their homes.

Secondly, people are starting to place them on roofs more and more. Roof's, not just in urban areas, but in most every location are starting now to be used for wind energy production. This is a source of residential real estate that has in the past been overlooked due to local restrictions that would keep someone from mounting such a device there due to local sentiment against it.

Lastly, folks are even placing turbine kits on chimneys. This is an interesting segment of the market that is just coming into its own. Chimneys make a terrific place to install a wind device because they're so high up in the atmosphere already and many times over the tree line. That's where the strongest wind is going to be found anyway.

In summary, the home wind turbine is fast becoming the most popular residential renewable energy source. When you are researching how to supply renewable power to your house, realize that this is no longer just a fad and quite a realistic possibility for you know matter where you live.
