When we're talking about wind turbine prices, often the discussion comes up as to whether vertical axis wind turbines are cheaper than horizontal axis wind turbines. These are the 2 major types of window devices and most of the discussion around home wind power revolves around these 2 pieces of equipment. With the diminishing of fossil fuel resources the world over, we are in a mode now where everyone is trying to get the best price they can for energy. Looking for ways to solve this problem and home means carefully evaluating pricing options are in the design considerations that go along toward stratifying those prices and the different options that you can actually purchase. In actuality, no, the vertical wind turbine is much more expensive than horizontal wind turbine and I will tell you why… The main reason by far is the fact that vertical wind turbines are a lot less efficient at producing energy from the wind that horizontal wind turbines. This is because the vertical wind turbine generates power by moving in the direction of the prevailing wind. It could well be that the prevailing wind where the vertical wind turbine is situated though, is very turbulent and therefore the shaft of the turbine is shifting from one direction to the other. The horizontal wind turbine on the other hand is specifically suited to take advantage of the most prevailing wind and a high-altitude data strong speed. There's a tail section that constantly orients the device in the direction of the strongest blowing breeze. Wind turbine prices are typically driven by a efficiency when you get right down to it. Also, vertical wind turbine kits are fairly new to the market. That means the economies of scale where factories are making great numbers of these devices have not really occurred with vertical wind turbines yet. As vertical wind turbines become more popular, these economies of scale will kick in and the prices will come down. Lastly, these devices are designed for roofs, which means they need to be more aesthetically pleasing than the horizontal variety. In order to be sellable in a mass-market urban environment, manufacturers have had to make these devices look like an ornamental piece that would go on a roof. Therefore, efficiency and power production has been sacrificed for the sake of looks. In summary, wind turbine prices are largely driven by these 3 factors and the vertical wind turbine is in no way cheaper than the horizontal. As this market becomes more fully developed though, this will likely change.
