Residential Wind Turbines: Are Batteries A Good Idea?

When it comes to residential wind turbines, there are many ways that you can go. One way is to install a battery backup system and send the power to your appliance from the battery versus directly from the wind device.

The situation in the Middle East of course has caused all this trouble and hassle we have to go thru with wind turbines. The high cost of oil along with the ever shrinking supplies have resulted in everyone paying attention to how they can save energy at home.

This is not going to be a problem that goes away quickly either. With supplies shrinking, we are all having to think about alternative ways of producing energy if we are to continue to supply power for our electronic devices like computers etc. and our homes in general.

Batteries can be a great way for you to make the most of any renewable energy system. That is because they will allow you to store energy when the wind is not blowing or if the sun is not shining, in the case of solar.

The battery packs associated with residential wind turbines are quite large though. They are the lead acid variety and are a very reliable technology and can be recharged multiple times. The other types of batteries like lithium ion and NiCad just simply do not have the rechargeable capacity that the lead acid variety has. It is certainly an old technology but it is tried and true and perfect for the renewable energy situation.

The problem is though that they can add a tremendous amount of expense to the project. When we are talking about making money from wind turbines or, turning them into a power production tool for your home, every penny counts. You can invest your money in things that do not bring a quick return, but you must understand that they will take a long time to pay back.

The alternative is to not have a battery backup system at all and simply do what is called a grid tie system. With residential wind turbines this is something that can easily be done although it takes the services of a skilled electrician who is familiar with what the power company's protocol is.

In summary, batteries can be a terrific solution to your problems with residential wind turbines. It can mean the difference between having energy available when you want it and simply not being able power your device with renewable energy. But, that comes at a price. And that price is quite high.
