How to Rid and Protect Your Home from Bugs and Insects

It's nine o'clock at night. You're sitting on the couch. Your cat jumps at something. It's a cricket. You see something skittle across the floor. It's a water bug. Something flies in front of the television. It's a moth. You realize that your home has been invaded, and you have no idea how or why, or how to get rid of them. There are things you can do to stop more bugs from coming in and to kill the bugs already in your house.

To keep bugs out, look for cracks and holes where bugs get in. These can be around windows, doors, around vents or pipes, and in the foundation. Go to work with a caulk gun and seal up all those gaps. Also, apply weather-stripping to doors and windows. That will show them. If you like to open your windows, make sure you have screens in them, and that the screens fit flush to the window and have no tears or holes. If you can't afford new screens, repair tears and holes with duct tape. It's not pretty, but it will do the trick. If there are gaps around the screen, apply the tape there as well. Do it in a way your screens don't look tacky, but plug every hole there is. If there is a hole, there is a bug that can get into your house.

For the bugs that are already in your house, you want to get rid of them, and you want to prevent any of their offspring from staging a second generation invasion. Moths are especially troublesome. You can buy inexpensive moth traps that they fly into, get stuck in, and die, but they leave little pods all over your house that make more moths. You need to clean thoroughly your cabinets, nooks, and crannies and look out for little, oval-shaped pots. Vacuum them up and throw out the bag, because moths can be born inside a vacuum bag as easily as they can from that old box of dog biscuits.

If you have pets or small children, you might be reluctant to use poisonous, heavy duty bug spray to kill flying bugs, roaches, ants, and other pests. Luckily, there are organic pesticides that are considered safe for humans and pets, but they are not a effective s chemical pesticides, so you'll need to use them more often, and be more diligent about your prevention tactics.

Ants are hard to get rid of, so if traps and sprays and keeping your house very, very clean fails to get rid of the ants, you may need to call a professional. Often, ants come from underneath a house, so that area will need to be treated as well.

Finally, if you have a bad and potentially costly infestation, like termites, it is best to call in a professional. You'll need to replace any termite-infested area with new wood, and you'll need to do whatever it takes to get rid of the little pests. Otherwise, you might be house-hunting instead of bug-hunting.
