Wind Turbine Prices: What Factors Will Force Them Down?

By : Roger Brown

Wind turbine prices are like anything else in that economic factors will drive costs down. What I mean by that is the more of these devices that are out in the field, the faster the prices will drop and the more acceptance they will have on a broader scale.
The question then is, what are the factors that will drive wind turbine prices down even further than they are now?

The initial thing or the most important thing that will drive prices down is the concept of economies of scale. As more and more units or purchase by people and they get installed in the field, demand will grow up. Manufacturers at that point will be able to predict larger quantities from their subsystem suppliers and the prices for the individual subcomponents will go down commensurately. At that point, the price of the overall unit will go down coincidently and more and more people will buy which will trigger the cycle to occur all over again.

As well, there are a number of new government programs that support wind turbine technology and installation of new devices all over the country. There are a number of incentives available through the federal government and through local and state agencies as well as through manufacturers. All these incentives add up to tremendous savings for the individual looking to buy a wind turbine device.
Wind turbine prices are largely irrelevant in this type of market environment. That is because with the federal credit you only pay two thirds of the amount of total installation costs. Combine that with the savings you will receive from manufacturers and any matching state and local incentives and your price for getting a home wind turbine up and running could be extremely low. As these incentives increase, this will also force wind turbine prices to continue to drop.

Lastly, technological improvements will also lead the way. As technological improvements continue to accelerate, like the speed at which power begins to be made, there will be more situations where a wind turbine in general will work at a house. Even very low wind situations will become plausible and homeowners will buy where ordinarily they would have to bypass this type project. This will also have a very downward affect the wind turbine prices.

In conclusion, wind turbine prices are headed down. There's no question about that and these three factors are what will drive them to where we all can afford them.
