It is a thrilling prospect to have a baby on the way or to have a loved one who is expecting one. A lot of preparations need to be done and one of them is getting the baby clothes ready along with other items like blankets and shawls. Knitters can save good money by making their own cloths rather than buying. Knitted items are also more unique and personal. There are specific knitting patterns for babies that should be used.

There are a number of factors to consider when choosing babies knitting patterns. One of them is fiber content. For young babies, the best choices are washable wool and cotton. These are easy to clean compared to other choices available such as silk and cashmere.

Baby clothes need to be washed every day or every other day and the yarn used should be washable along with other items. Food and other stains are common and you want to knit items on which stain treatments can be used. An item that needs special care will be tedious to handle and will not be used often. This does not mean however that a special item like a receiving blanket or shawl.

Also keep in mind that babies have sensitive skin. The yarn used to knit items for them should therefore be soft yarn. A sweater or other items that has them feeling itchy because it is rough will surely be.

It is also important that knitted clothes are easy to put on and remove if they go over the head such as sweaters and knitted dresses. One can opt for V-neck designs or cardigans that are buttoned down rather than being worn over the head. Sweaters head openings can be made larger with buttons or press studs at the shoulders.

The construction of the items is also a point of concern. Items that do no have long ties are ideal. This is because ties like ribbons can get caught, pulled and cause possible strangulation. Buttons should be sewn on tightly otherwise a child can pull off a loose one, put it in their mouth and be at risk of choking. Zippers are a better choice. Items with small holes are also not the best such as those with lace and eyelets as little fingers can get caught in there. This can however be used on shawls and blankets but it not advisable on clothes.

With all the factors in mind, decide what kind of item you want to knit. You can strike a balance between the much needed everyday items like sweaters, booties and hats and one or two special or heirloom projects like a special blanket.

You can then seek out the knitting patterns for babies in several places. You can download them at no cost from the internet and you can also find them in knitting magazines and books. Most patterns will have useful instructions. The items you are knitting may be for yourself or for one who is getting ready to welcome their bundle of the joy. The time and concentration it takes to knit items rather than pick them up from a store is a gift that is straight from the gift.
