Everyone says wind turbine kits are something you should look into for your home. The sky-high power costs around the country and the feeling that the raw materials that make the power are slipping through our fingers is giving us all the feeling that we must take some sort of definitive action to stem this tide. However, are wind turbine kits the right thing for everyone to do? Should I feel guilty for not having a wind turbine or some other renewable device that I can use to harvest energy on an ongoing basis around my house? The answers to those questions is clearly, no, and here are the reasons you would not want to buy one for your home... You live in an area with less than 9 mph average wind speed - while this is not a hard and fast rule, it is best to make sure you have at least 9 mph to make the project an obvious one that you need to do. There are systems that will function today with a lot less but there are just no guarantees so it is better to have a stronger sustained wind to make the project a no-brainer. So, if you don't have nine, move on. Your local community disapproves of them - this is a holdover from days gone by, but it is still a limitation for many of us around the country who want to install wind capacity on their own property. Many communities just won't allow them. This is because they have proven to be a distraction to many people and a danger to migrating birds and other wildlife. They cost too much - let's face it- not everyone can work a $10,000 home wind turbine into their budget. This is a lot of money and many people will just have to keep paying exorbitant utility power prices because they do not have the cash to buy a wind turbine unit. Taking some action though is better than none at all. Even if you find that the wind turbine doesn't work for you in your particular circumstances right now, it may in the not too distant future, so your analysis and learning will not have gone to a total waste. Don't despair too much though - wind turbine kits and the technology that drives them are improving every day and it won't be long before it gets better to the point that one will work for you if you find the negatives are too stacked against the project at the present moment.
