Home Wind Turbines: 2 Places They May Or May Not Work For You

Home wind turbines are becoming very popular in a lot of locations around the world. Even though they seem very commonsensical, they do not work in all cases.

These are 2 places around your house that may or may not work for home wind turbines...

Placing home wind turbines on your roof - The roof it is really a great location where your home wind turbines can be mounted. That is because the wind there can often be a big mess. When I say big mess, I really mean that it is very turbulent on your roof and there's no way to really predict from moment to moment where exactly the wind will be coming from. The angular geometry of the roof landscape causes it to deflect wind in many directions. So, it is lot easier for a vertical axis wind turbine to be located there because it is indifferent to the direction the wind is coming. A horizontal axis wind turbine conversely requires a tail section to orient the device into the direction of the strongest wind and therefore, if you chose to put any horizontal device on your roof it would be constantly shifting from one direction or the other.

Mounting home wind turbines on top of a tower - Depending on the strength of your wind flow, this can be a good or a very bad idea about where to locate your home wind turbines on your property. It is very possible to get the strongest wind when your wind energy device is mounted on top of a tower. But, you have to do some testing in order to flesh out this theory. In other words, you need to know specifically about the wind at each location where you are considering to place the device. If the wind is over 6 mph then you probably will be able make a lot of power at that location. However, it could be a total flop for you if you have to invest $40,000- $50,000 in a tower to get you up that high where the wind blows that steadily.

In summary, home wind turbines can be great for you in terms of lowering your home energy cost, but they are sensitive to where you put them. They will make a lot less energy in one place than in another, so be careful and analyze your options very carefully.
