With wind turbine kits there are many components of the product that work together to make the device efficient. These factors are constantly being researched by companies that are in this business and great strides in efficiency are happening all the time. These are the components that figure into efficiency... Cut-in speed - This is the speed at which the wind turbine will begin to make power and convert it to electricity. Just because the rotor blades are turning does not mean that the device is making electricity for you. You have to also overcome the internal resistance of the generator, or better said, the shaft turning inside the generator, in order to make total sense out of this concept. The bottom line is though as the cut-in speed gets lower, so will the popularity of these devices in all areas of the country. In many places it is impossible to get a wind turbine to turn and make power because the wind speed is so low. There are wind turbines nowadays that will cut-in at less than 2 miles an hour of wind. Generator efficiency - This is certainly a factor in something that you must pay some attention to if you're going to fully evaluate the wind turbine. This is the device that does most of the actual energy conversion. The shaft turns inside the generator and the shaft is driven by the rotor blades of course. Average Speed of the wind - This is an enormous factor and one which goes hand-in-hand with cut-in speed. Your average speed will determine the amount of electricity that you can expect to achieve over time. It is extremely sensitive to slight variations as well. A difference in 1 mph can make a huge bottom-line difference to the payoff you would get in terms of electricity from the home wind turbine. Where you locate it - Also, where you end up placing the home wind turbine device will have a tremendous impact on how much electricity you can get. If you locate it on top of a tower then you'll get the most electricity but you talking about a considerable expense to purchase the tower in the first place. However, this still might be the right thing for you to do. If you locate the wind turbine on your roof then you may not get as much energy but it will be a heck of a lot easier for you to access this device when you need to work on it. In conclusion, wind turbine kits have a number of factors that drive success or efficiency. Cut-in speed is the most important and will have the greatest implications for the future of this technology.
