Wind Turbine Kits: 2 Mistakes You Can Make

By : Roger Brown

When you are considering wind turbine kits for your home it is best to go into these projects with a realistic view of what they will actually produce. Many people think they will just work anywhere and that is certainly not the case.

The 2 mistakes people make and the main ways they fail are...

They don't fully understand their options - This is a situation where if you don't get it right the first time he could be very expensive to make any changes. The difficulty is knowing exactly where you want put the wind turbine and how much energy is available in those locations. People want to get right at it and install a wind turbine and start making energy from the wind blowing all around them but you really can't just dive in them and get these things right without some learning first. You have got to analyze this with precision a doctor would use in sizing up a treatment for a life-threatening condition. That is to say you should go to whatever lengths necessary to be able understand what you're dealing with. This can take some time and cost a little money but in the long run you'll be a lot better off. This is probably the biggest mistake that anyone makes in the wind turbine arena.

They buy too much home wind turbine for their situation - It is very easy to over buy. That is because of the way wind turbine products are rated. They will carry a nominal rating such as 1 kW of power available from the device. This is what you want to believe because it makes everything very simple. Your analysis is very straightforward - that because you know if your house requires a half a kilowatt then you'll be covered if you get a full kilowatt. The problem with this though is that the way the manufacturers come up with these ratings is at a very high wind speeds. It could be something like 28 miles an hour. The problem with that is hardly anybody averages that high of a speed and it is more usual to have under 10 miles an hour as an average wind speed. Therefore you could get away with a lot less turbine than you are likely to buy if you just charge ahead.

In summary, wind turbine kits can cut a big chunk out of your power costs but you cannot be sloppy about what you put in and how you put it in. You have to fully investigate your options and you have to be surgical in how you do this to make the impact you think you are going to have.
