When you first think about getting a residential wind turbine all you tend to think about is all the power you are going to make and all the money you are going to save. But, that is not always the case and there are many ways that these devices can end up just not saving any money at all.
It is wise to size up your options when looking into a device like this but these are the ways that a residential wind turbine can let you down...
If you have insufficiently sized up the amount of wind you have to make energy out of - This is the part where most people fall by the wayside. They simply can't make themselves spend the time to collect the data. They want to jump right in and make energy from the wind as soon as they grasp on the concept. However, these types of projects are terribly unforgiving of anyone who does not spend the time on data collection upfront.
If you didn't check out permitting and whether or not you would be allowed to install the device in the first place - there a lot of permitting issues that can shut you down if you are not careful about learning what the process is in your community or in your neighborhood. You need to understand that there are a lot of people that want to see when turbines eradicated from their local environment. They are against having these devices anywhere near their property because they consider them dangerous to local bird populations and annoying to look at. This is not just a small issue. As a matter of fact, it is a very serious one that will keep a lot of people from being able to enjoy the benefits of a wind turbine kit on their property.
If there are just not enough upfront incentives with government subsidies to offset the huge upfront cost of the device - Right now, there are a number of options available both federally and locally to reduce the cost of your wind turbine kit purchase. However, we don't know if those incentives are going to last forever. There are certainly a lot of local matching options available too. But, by the same token they are intended to match with the federal government is doing and if the federal programs go away, then the state and local and even utility programs might go away too. So, you need to act while the time is ripe for this.
In summary, the residential wind turbine can definitely let you down if you don't check out all these options from the very beginning.
